About my art

I'm primarily concerned with colour and light; the lush green forests, the blue sea, the golden sands and the bright sunlight are my inspiration here in Skiathos. In the past I've worked in oils and acrylic but at present my favourite medium is soft pastel. I love their pure colour, their texture and their direct response. I take photos to use for reference but prefer when it's possible to paint from nature, this often involves returning to a site at the same time of day for a few days. I paint on coloured pastel paper or special sanded card building up layer upon layer with quite vigorous strokes; putting down bocks of colour rather than using line. I constantly refer to the scene in front me until a point when the picture emerges and the painting takes on an identity of it's own; then at home, over a couple of weeks or so, I ponder, adjust and add final details. By this stage they have a depth and intensity reminiscent of oil painting.

Original paintings are normally sold mounted and protected for transit within a specially designed, robust foam core display folder. This is then wrapped in bubble wrap and delivered either personally or by courier.

The Limited Edition Prints are high quality glicee reproductions, printed on a heavyweight, textured, watercolour paper with pigment based inks that guarantee colour permanence. These are available locally mounted and wrapped in clear cellophane making them presentable as gifts without framing. By post they will be rolled and packaged in a cardboard tube. Greetings cards, blank on the inside, are available locally and by post.

Anyone visiting Skiathos is invited to view my work at Karavotsakisma House; visitors are welcome any day but to be quite sure I'm there please telephone or email beforehand.
